SINGAPORE - A mother who pushed her nine-year-old special needs son to his death last June was on Wednesday sentenced to the maximum penalty of 10 years imprisonment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

Rebecca Loh, 32 and unemployed, was found to have been suffering from post-schizophrenic depression at the time of the offence, but was deemed fit to plead. She admitted her guilt in High Court to having fatally pushed her sickly son, Gabriel, to his death from their fifth-floor West Coast Road flat.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Eugene Lee called for a sentence of eight to 10 years in prison. Justice Tay Yong Kwang dismissed Loh's lawyer's request for a further medical assessment to determine the length of the jail sentence.

Instead he opted for the maximum term, and said this was "in view of the accused's history and the hope of complete recovery, and for the safety of those (whom she) may come in contact with".
