China warns Obama not to meet Dalai Lama

China said on Tuesday that a possible meeting between U.S. President Barack Obama and the Dalai Lama would hurt relations between the two countries, already at odds over Washington's arms sales to Taiwan.

Dalai LamaZhu Weiqun, a Vice Minister of the United Front Work Department of China's ruling Communist Party, told a news conference that his government would vehemently oppose any meeting between Obama and the Dalai Lama, the exiled Tibetan leader who Beijing deems a dangerous separatist.

A meeting "would be totally at odds with international accepted practices and would seriously undermine the political basis of Sino-U.S. relations", added Zhu.

NASHUA, NEW HAMPSHIRE: US President Barack Obama plans to meet with Tibet's exiled spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, despite China's opposition, the White House said Tuesday without giving a date.

"The president will meet with the Dalai Lama, and he intends to do so," White House spokesman Bill Burton told reporters on Air Force One en route to New Hampshire.

"The Dalai Lama is an internationally respected religious and cultural leader and the president will meet with him " he said.

China is really stupid to be overly-sensitive when it comes to Dalai Lama, after all, what can an old man do, incarnate himself into Agent Smiths' replications as in The Matrix?

China is welcoming Dalai Lama to ride the fast train to Tibet. He will be impressed !!!

I do not see why Obama cannot meet the Dalai Lama. He is being met as as a religious leader and there is nothing wrong with that. No different from Obama meeting the pope. As long as he is not greeted as leader/ruler of Tibet (Chinese sovereignty issue) there is no contridiction with current US position on Tibet (Tibet is part of China).

However, because US recognizes one China policy, US President does not meet Taiwanese President or else it would contridict its own policy. So Beijing should just keep quiet in this instance with the Dalai Lama.

But I can see the Tibet's strategic importance to China (hence the noise we hear). Many rivers in India and China originate from Tibet. Since Tibet is part of China, China controls many of the rivers that flow in India. In a region with a rapidly growing population control of this water source is power! The Chinese could literally turn off the tap!

As it is Obama already postponed this meeting prior to his China trip to give face to Chinese. What more should the China want?

Fast train and roads to Tibet also mean ability to rush troops there should there be a border conflict. Tibet = water. Even Mekong originates from Tibet!
