It's a stop gap measure. It buys some time but it's not a solution. The next generation has to figure out a more lasting solution which could include surrendering to the inevitable.

there could be a 3rd way out with a new geopolitical entity.

Another version is that LKY wanted things his way and TAR told LKY point blank, play by the rules or get out. LKY opted to get out. But he had to do it in a dramatic fashion - that's the crying scene.
A Malaysia with sinkapore in the south and Penang in the north dominated by Chinese would have made a big difference to the country and curb the Malay dominance. But old fart was just to eager and hungry for power.

The problem was sinkieland saw merger as union of 2 countries while Malaysia viewed us as state within a country. Even the Malaya had to change their name to "Malaysia" with "SI" meaning Sinkieland. There was very little ideological foundation in the merger then. Today I don't think Malaysia will be willing to accept a re-merger if it was based on sinkieland terms. I think this book is a wonderful book - brilliantly written, candid, frank, honest and brutally truthful from the heart of a great leader and politician.
If we do not know our past, we will not have a good future.
All the highlights in the book are the stark reminders to Singaporeans NOT to forget the problems and issues that were aimed at finishing off a small aborted baby.The aborted child struggled to survive in the midst of a very hostile environment and against all odds, the aborted child succeeded to carve a niche for himself and now it stands among the most developed countries in the world. This is a miracle itself. Thanks to Mr Lee and his team of dedicated and selfless leaders. Singaporeans should be eternally grateful and indebted to Mr Lee and His Team for our present wonderful state of affairs. Majulah Singapura!!!
