Backfire: Aussie PM flaunts her asset, but it’s too little and too late

Didn't know who he was.. I do now after today! Tipped to be future Labor PM

Not surprised. He used to be one of the faceless men. I am not sure if he has spoilt his chance at Prime Minister-ship. The union backers will not forgive him and I doubt he wants to be held captive by the unions which is what happened to Gillard.

The show is not over yet.
Tomorrow, we will know if Kevin Rudd gets to be PM (no-confidence vote fail in the minority govt) or opposition Tony Abbott becomes PM (no-confidence vote pass) or Julia Gillard as caretaker PM (Aug electiion called)

But one thing I admire about Australian pollies are their mental toughness. Not a tears shed by this woman PM at her defeat speech.

Singaporean pollies are sissies in comparison, sue here and sue there over small matters.

Looks like Tony Abbott is playing a smarter game by not calling for a no-confidence for a Rudd govt.

Kevin Rudd is now sworn in as the 28th (26th) PM. The democratic process wins. No coup. Dramatic? Yes. What a turn of events in the past 15 hours. The 2nd PM ever to return to his old job in OZ.

3 years ago, he was cruelly removed by the same faceless kingmaker who re-I stated him. This is karma.

PM in the past were given a warning, Kevin was never given a chance. He should have changed his management style now.

Labor (progressive) vs Liberal (conservatives in oz definition)
Labor women make the best girlfriends (willing to try new ideas but promiscuous and spendthrift) but Lib women make the best wives. (Boring in bed but thrifty)

I watched this mandarin interview again this morning. Notice when he was asked about being leading Australia again with reference to Deng XiaoPing his reply was no and his mention of the rise and fall of the chinese premier. I think even right back then he must be planning something already that culminated to yesterdays event. Note that the video was posted in Dec 2010. Already, a lot of my colleague here are voting Labor, nobody wants the mad monk in office. Wonder if Turnbull is going to make a run now.

Australia’s 大内高手、三朝元老

Albo, the guru of office politics and the master of palace intrigues

I, Albo - the great survivor
http://www.smh.com.au/opinion/political-news/i-albo--the-great-survivor-20130626-2oxpi.html

Ministers became collateral damage in every major battle of the titanic war between Julia Gillard and Kevin Rudd. Throughout it all, Mr Albanese kept his job despite openly backing Mr Rudd. Now he is poised to become deputy prime minister.

Widely respected and regarded as essential to the Labor fight, Mr Albanese not only hung onto his dual roles of cabinet minister and chief parliamentary tactician under Ms Gillard, he earned her heartfelt praise even after declaring his support for Mr Rudd in the first challenge in February last year.

The second, aborted leadership challenge in March forced the resignations of Chris Bowen, Simon Crean, Kim Carr, Joel Fitzgibbon (as chief whip) and more. Again, Mr Albanese kept his cabinet post as Transport and Infrastructure Minister, as well as his job as Leader of the House.

Mr Swan's resignation as deputy prime minister cleared the way for Mr Albanese, who has long been tipped as Mr Rudd's favourite as his number two. So what's Mr Albanese's power?.....“Albanese is the one unifying figure Labor has … [and] the one person who's able to talk to both sides in this''.

Mr Albanese is regarded as sitting somewhat above the internal fray, putting the interests of the party ahead of his own.

The less-charitable view might be that Mr Albanese, as Ms Gillard's parliamentary point man, owed her his absolute loyalty.

Hard to predict who will be the next ALP leader. After this so Kevin/Juliar drama. I find the word ALP Leader to be false word. How can a Leader be overthrown so easily by the faceless men? What sort of leadership position is that? Might as well call it ALP Seat Warmer...

And another question to all Oz experts...what can Rudd do at this last hour before the erection??

THey already have a 4% increase just from the news yesterday. They already are saying 12 seats are contesteable now. Technically, Rudd can call a new election date now, and that is why Tony keep asking what is the election date he wants. As for what he can do, plenty if he plays his cards right ALP might still win. Remember, a lot do not want Abbott as PM.

He is just a 100% Labor loyal dog, reliable assistant to any leaders.

A prime example of Labor values, his working class background is the shining light of what Labor is all about. Like those PAP ministers tearful story of being raised in a 1-room Toa Payoh flat with one parent struggling to put the kids to uni. Except in this case, Labor policies raised him to become DPM.

Rudd will be credited for saving ALP again. This is not an American election. The caucus elect the leader for the Labor side. The First among peers is how we describe it.

Watch out for Bill Shorten. He killed off Gillard to save his seat and short circuit PM rival, Greg Combet. Greg is out of the cabinet. Bill is politically advantaged to reach his ambition of the top job.

Rudd's ego and inability to make decisions and inability to delegate will be his downfall.

It is the same with PAP old guard, the American GOP and many other politicians - the cause is lost.

Even in NASA and Defense companies, too much inbreeding. No fresh blood from outside to keep the original spirit alive.

In Oz both Labour and Liberals are having too much inbreeding. Look At WA..Kim Beazely's daughter contest in that Belmont seat but luckily lost. Co-opted due to being Kim's daughter.

In Qld, the Premier gave his son a job. Many of them are related to someone who was a minister or senior party member. However bottom line is the electorate still decides and these in breds still have to contest and work to win seats. Unlike PAP where Father and Son hardly work...for the case of Old Fart even better, just disqualify the contesting party so win by default.

Kim Beazley himself is a son of a Fed minister but he is not good enough to reach the top job. A Oxford Rhodes Scholar, it is a reminder that scholars, like lawyers, have limits.

Watch this up and coming politician from the Liberal.

If Rudd wins the election for them, I'll seriously doubt they will kick him from that position again. The electorate would never ever forgive labor for doing the same again. It's game on, he still has a lot to do but it's better then Gillard at the helm.

BrokenHill Prospecting & Commonwealth used to operate like a public sector companies but it has changed.

Robert Gottliebsen

One of the first things the new Treasurer Chris Bowen did on gaining office was to meet with business groups. It’s a good start.

Bowen will have been told about the by-products of the mining boom – the Gillard industrial relations disaster, militant unions, horrendous government regulation etc. Both Kevin Rudd and Bowen know the resources boom is over.

What Rudd and Bowen may not know is the extent of the dramatic cultural change taking place in vast areas of the Australian business community.

If Rudd and Bowen are smart they will encourage it because it’s the best hope the nation has to deal with the end of the resources boom. Tony Abbott and Joe Hockey certainly understand the change and it’s an important pillar of their planning.

The best way to illustrate the change of culture in the business community is to start with what is now our second-largest company – BHP. (It lost its top status to Commonwealth Bank partly because Commonwealth understood the new game faster than BHP).

Only six weeks ago Andrew Mackenzie took the reins as BHP chief executive. As I pointed out after the appointment was announced, BHP has never seen a chief executive like Mackenzie (Mackenzie's clean break is bigger than you think, February 25).

Traditionally BHP, and so many other Australian companies, was bit like Canberra is today – BHP kept spending to get bigger on the basis that, of course, the revenue would come in. It was all about spending to get bigger faster to benefit from the boom. Efficiency was not always high on the agenda.

Mackenzie is naturally completing the series of expansions that started before he came to office. But then the mining investment boom for BHP is over, and projects will need to be good to get up. And the same applies to every other miner. From now on it’s about cultural change and greater efficiency. The main emphasis will be about lifting output not by new mines but by doing things better and/or lifting profits by lowering costs.

Mackenzie believes that Australia can once again be a low-cost coal and iron ore producer. He has already taken $800 million out of costs and there is a lot more to come by working smarter.

Mackenzie sets about the task without great fanfare and that’s what thousands of other Australian companies are doing.

In manufacturing, General Motors is actually doing the same thing but is explaining bluntly to the workers that there can no longer be union control of management in agreements and there must be pay cuts. Workers get the chance to change rather than lose their jobs. But over time, where Mackenzie can’t make a mine work so that it is profitable, the result will be the same as for General Motors – the mine will shut.

But the cultural change goes deeper than just efficiency. Australian companies are starting to look to be global leaders where that is possible. BHP aspires to be a global leader in shale fracking technology which it uses to extract oil and gas in the US.

Meanwhile Mackenzie may be the first BHP chief executive in history to leave his successor less reserves than he was handed by his predecessor Marius Kloppers.

But BHP, if Mackenzie is successful, will be much more efficient and, depending on markets, much more profitable. Whether it be BHP or General Motors the culture change in Australian business is profound and Rudd and Bowen will not find it easy to adapt Canberra policies and attitudes that were set for a different era. Yet given the China resources boom is over, there is going to be less tax revenue from mining unless miners like BHP become more productive. That also means that the culture change we are seeing at BHP and in most areas of Australian business must also extend to Canberra politicians and public servants.

Why does the kingmaker Bill Shorten sinks his ship and spoils his chance at becoming PM?
He is good at playing political chess.

2013 election outcome will see Rudd defeated but a large majority of Labor MPs retained, including the kingmaker's and his power base.

If the union plans go well, Labor-Greens retain the Senate majority so the Abbott government will not be able to remove any pro-union legistrations. This will render the Abbott govt weak.

At some point in time, Kevin Rudd will face a leadership challenge, 2016?. In Opposition, it will be easier to remove the Leader of Opposition, esp with the unionised factions of Labor still intact and the anti-union Rudd and his fragile "faction" demolished for good.

Bill Shorten will take over as Leader of Opposition and bring Labor back to government in 2019.

The unions live and Labor will never gets its reform.

The introduction of the Kentucky Fried Quail………..that was not to be

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L3BjtFLHnMs

Perhaps, the Kentucky Fried Quail should have followed the footsteps of the Iron Lady and learn to be more patient:

Conservative Party Leadership Election of 1975
http://everything2.com/title/Conservative+Party+Leadership+Election+of+1975

In the autumn of 1974 the Conservative Party experienced the second of two electoral disappointments when the minority Labour Government, elected in February of that year, went back to the electorate in October and was returned with a small majority. The leader of the Conservative Party was one Edward Heath who had been in office since 1964, and having now fought four elections and lost three, his one experience of government from June 1970 to February 1974 had been somewhat fraught, and thus there was a groundswell of opinion within the party that it might be about time to think about appointing a new leader.

Before the Kentucky Fried Quail staged the party coup to have the Goose Foie Gras roasted for dinner, she was in fact enormously popular among the Aussies. But her seizure of power after that “Night of the Long Knives” had totally and irreparably destroyed her public image. The Aussies had forever deemed her as an ungrateful traitor who became PM thru the ‘illegitimate’ backdoor. The Opposition and the media also never let her off by constantly reminding the people that Brutish betrayal of her boss. Her popularity had forever plummeted and never able to recover despite her enormous, unprecedented and incredible achievement as PM both in governing and legislating.

If the Kentucky Fried Quail had learnt from the Iron Lady to be more patient, allowing the Goose Foie Gras to be defeated and rejected by the people in a general election in 2010, and thus denying him a power base or any pretext to stage a political comeback. The Kentucky Fried Quail could then legitimately challenge him for the party leadership, just as the Iron Lady did in 1975 when Grocer Heath was challenged and replaced by grocer’s daughter after he had been rejected by the people. Grocer Heath became the Incredible Sulk and was as vengeful as the Goose Foie Gras had ever been. But unlike Goose Foie Gras, Grocer Heath was decisively rejected by the people and could never to stage a resurrection.

Grocer Heath was arrogant, aloof and unloved by his party MP colleagues as Goose Foie Gras:

Conservative Party Leadership Election of 1975
http://everything2.com/title/Conservative+Party+Leadership+Election+of+1975
The one advantage that the Thatcher campaign had was the undeniable fact that Edward Heath was not, in the modern vernacular a 'people person'. In fact his utter lack of interpersonal skills had produced a long list of Conservative MPs who had, over the years, been variously overlooked, insulted or slighted by the party leader and were more than ready to help Thatcher out.

Rudd’s downfall: his own handiwork, and years in the making
http://www.crikey.com.au/2011/06/23/rudds-downfall-his-own-handiwork-and-years-in-the-making/
“I don’t give a fuck what you fuckers think,” Rudd told them. It was a perfect summation of Rudd’s view of his backbench and the factions — and another jolt for factional leaders, unused to being told how irrelevant they were.

Hence, if the Kentucky Fried Quail had given the Aussies their chance and satisfaction to eat the Goose Foie Gras and then legitimately took over the party leadership, she could have been introduced to the Aussies as a popular saviour just as the Iron Lady was. Instead she was introduced and forever imprinted as a MacBeth-like backstabber.

The way the Kentucky Fried Quail issued her challenge is, to say the least, not as impressive and gentleman (or rather ladylike) as the Iron Lady:

Conservative Party Leadership Election of 1975
http://everything2.com/title/Conservative+Party+Leadership+Election+of+1975
As a matter of courtesy Thatcher went to see Heath to inform him of her decision to stand against him. According to Thatcher's own account of the meeting Heath's only response was the laconic "if you must", although according to other sources Heath added the words "You'll lose".

A Coup By Any Other Name
http://www.themonthly.com.au/issue/2012/march/1350869108/rhys-muldoon/coup-any-other-name
As a compromise, Rudd had asked Gillard to wait at least until October before requesting a ballot for the leadership. She had agreed, and the last thing she had said to Rudd, as she left his office, was: “I just want you to know, I’m not going to challenge you.” In an antechamber outside Rudd’s office, she made a call. It was brief. She turned on her heel, walked back into Rudd’s office and said. “Kevin, I’m challenging for the leadership.”
